Striatum, in the basal ganglia, is also imp for specific kinds of memories: not declarative memory, but habit learning. Its hard to come up with examples that you can test in the lab. A task that"s about habit learning that doesn"t involve motor movements. So the researchers came up with this weather prediction task. In the figure, we are looking at the display ppl in this experiment saw. they need to say rain" or sun". The info they"re given is just these 4 cards. So when they see these four, without any other info, you say rain or sun, and they say either correct or incorrect. Then you get the next cards, and repeat. Embedded within each cards, there"s diff shapes; and each card is associated with a certain probability of rain. No card is 100% sun or rain, but they have a mixture of probabilities. Control participants could get better at this but no one ever got perfect.
