PSY336H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Peak Experience, Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority
Document Summary
There is something greater than the self that people start moving towards at some point in their lives. Jung thought that personality development involved individuation and transcendence. Goals having to do with power, +"ve self-evaluation, competition, money, etc. (self- serving goals) tend to be negatively associated with well-being. Goals less about the ego and more about relatedness, relationships, community, generativity, etc. tend to be associated with +"ve well-being. All agree that there is a tension between relatedness oriented goals and self-oriented goals. Deficiently oriented goals points you towards self-oriented goals. People reported these peak experiences doing just about anything. These themes came from many different people doing many different behaviours. Essence of it is that people"s minds become unified, absorbed in what they are doing (merging of action and awareness). Within our self-concept, we are self-evaluative, thinking about our competence, our attractiveness, self-esteem, etc. We have our orienting reflex which draws our attention.
