Skepticism about a psychological theory of attention, if attention can really be defined. Cognitive psychology is different from epistemology, both study knowing. Epistemology: how knowledge should work, has generally assumed folk psychology. Cognitive psychology: how we actually go about knowing. Information is an event that reduces uncertainty by ruling out alternatives. Brains try to predict such t-information by making use of statistical relevance. We have this completely formal and probabilistic account of what information is. We distinguish is from m-information folk psychology, representational content. The issue of selection, how does the organism select or pick the information it is actually going to use. Issue that problem of selection has to trade-off generalization discrimination trade-off: they can never be equal, generalization can be many different things. Optimization: the brain can optimize, balance between two. The brain has to communicate, there is communication within the brain. When you try to communicate information, there"s two opposing risks.
