About once a year he spent time in seclusion, quiet contemplation during one of
these retreats that he undertook on mount Huron, short way from Mecca, where he
experienced his first revelation—as Muhammad sat one night in solitude of his
retreat, an angel appeared before him, grabbed him and squeezed him (angel
Gabriel) and commands him to recite and he is totally ter r ified and says he doesnt
know how to read and angel continuesrecite for you God who created man from
blood. Muhammad is terr ified and is taken by his wife to visit a Christian sage
who aff irms his experience and encouraged him/aff irms he has been identified as
a prophet of God and Khadijah becomes his first believer
Over course of next 20 years develops more confidence and starts to share
revelations from God with other people around him however he encounters
resistance, yet message he is preaching is of morality, care for underpr ivileged in
society—goes against prevailing culture of the tribe
Year 622, Muhammad has reputation for diplomatic skill and ability to solve
problems and as a result was invited to arbitrate dispute amongst tribes in Yathrib
about 300 miles from Mecca
Migration to Yathrib is called Hejira
Yathr ib comes to be called Medina—meaning city of the profit
Start of Muslim calendar—year 622 is year 1
City of Yathr ib embraces him and accepts his teaching
Muhammad stays there with his community for quite some times and is able to
establish relationships with them
Produces documentcovenant of Medina granting full religious freedom and
equality of Jews provided they do not enter into alliances against them
