1900-1939: produces many works that have shaped the field of psychoanalysis. Theory of how the human mind operated. Think of: revealing, or unearthing what we have repressed never go away. Major insight: our repressed, hidden desires and instincts are functional they shape our conscious deeds and thoughts without our even knowing it. We are all ill (but okay) main problem is when return of the repressed causes undue suffering (neurosis, psychosis) We can be freed from this undue suffering by becoming aware of unconscious material. The three level of consciousness iceberg model . Top of the iceberg: the conscious (smallest portion for argument s sake, 10%) surface level. Level of awareness anything that we think, etc . Middle of the iceberg: the preconscious (about 15%) just below the surface. Ordinary memory that can be summoned at ease they have not been repressed. Bottom of the iceberg: unconscious (very big 75% of our mind)
