Document Summary

Emerging alternatives: new because do not make up sign portion of world energy use. Today we look at: nuclear (non-renewable, biomass energy, hydropower. Greatest are oil, coal and natural gas. World dominated by fossil fuels and traditional alternatives. Hydro, nuclear and biomass are conventional energy alternatives. Canada depends a lot on nuclear and hydro. Two approaches: dams harness kinetic energy by storing water in reservoirs impoundment approach, run-of-river generates energy without greatly disrupting flow of river water. Efficient, as high as any modern-day energy source. Hydro has good eroi compared to most energy sources. Public concern and cost of addressing concern have made it very expensive to expand nuclear power. Not as big as it was predicted to be. Nuclear reactor: where chain reactions are initiated. Nuclear fission splitting apart of atomic nuclei. Nuclear energy energy that holds together protons and neutrons within nucleus of an atom. Fission generates heat and electricity in nuclear reactors.
