Food sovereignty: the right to healthy and culturally appropriate food. Food sovereignty is a more holistic approach to obtaining food. Food security: the right to sufficient safe and nutritious food. There is a strong connection between the indigenous people and their food. There is a relationship between the people and the land. The introduction of mining and tar sands resulted in loss of traditional knowledge. People had to stop eating food from the land (ie: hunting for game) because of cancer risks. Fish was the major source of food for indigenous people in fort chip. Now men can only eat fish once a week. Women of childbearing age can only eat fish once a month. Women who were pregnant couldn"t eat fish at all. Relates back to ecofeminism: women are some of the most hardest hit when it comes to ecological crisis. Women"s local knowledge becomes limited because there are now only predominantly male jobs in oil and mining.
