Document Summary

Ice sheet thickness during the last glacial maximum (wisconsin glaciation) Ice sheet started to melt down 14 thousand years ago. Example of mountain glacier (not continental glacier) After certain amount of snow fall, snow compacts and flow downs. Equilibrium line: melting and accumulation is equal. Temperature controls growth and shrinking of glacier: colder accumulate more snow, glacier moves further into valley, warmer glacier retreats. All rocks and boulders are dropped off there forming tills. Ice moves across continent to ocean forming icebergs. Huge pressure on bedrock: erodes and suppresses bedrock. Thickness of continental glacier was 1. 5 3km. Today the largest continental glacier is in antarctica. Layer iii: quaternary glacier deposits erosional and depositional forces at work. See bottom diagram: see glacial landforms (drumlins, esker, kettle lakes, moraine) Would not be here w/o massive ice shields. Can tell process behind u-shape is not river but is a glacier. Get u-shaped valleys when glaciers come through v-shaped valley.
