Document Summary

Lecture 20 (lecture 17 slides cont"d + lecture 18 slides) Microbes so small and so important / global n cycle. Recall that all microbes need source of carbon, electron and energy. Microbes can get these 3 things in different ways. Organisms that live in anoxic conditions use light as source of energy, have source of carbon (co2), but source of electrons can"t be from oxygen (no oxygen b/c anoxic conditions) Instead of producing oxygen as waste, these microorganisms produce sulfur waste (solid sulfur) This is another way photoautotrophs use light. = autotrophic organism uses light energy, inorganic electron donor, and co2. Have anoxic bottom because don"t mix totally. If water is clear enough for sunlight to get to bottom, get photolithoautotrophs growing at bottom. In picture purple sulfur bacteria is growing and smells really bad. Done by 4 unrelated groups of bacteria: purple sulfur bacteria, degree of oxygen tolerance varies, are flexible in how much oxygen they can.
