ENV234H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Coccolith, Dna Replication, Archaea
Document Summary
Lecture 19 (lecture 16 slides cont"d + lecture 17 slides) Basic structure of aquatic ecosystems / microbes so small and so important. Seeing aquatic systems warm up but could have conditions where aquatic systems cool down with global warming. Stratification is happening for longer periods of time. Lakes and oceans thaw earlier in spring and freeze later and later in fall. Red dots = earlier thaw in spring. Red dots = later freeze in fall. Measured lower chlorophyll in ocean than before. = reduction in amount of primary producers in ocean. = less food for everyone else who depend on phytoplankton for survival. Have seen shifts within diatom group itself: ex: aulacoseira form long filaments of several individuals. = heavier since a lot of them stuck together. = sink faster: cyclotella are smaller and lighter and sink slower, in 1850 have switch where cyclotella has been a lot more abundant, so shift in composition of species.
