Gender is based on learned notions of masculinity and femininity (cid:862)typi(cid:272)al(cid:863) (cid:373)ale a(cid:374)d fe(cid:373)ale roles. Gender roles: princess vs white knight (self taught during childhood), victims and murderers (learn social roles) Women learn to be alluring for men (makeup, transition to adulthood) Gender is learned, so gender roles vary by culture and over time. Men and women behave differently as consumers (researchers use these differences) Fischer and arnold research: differences in shopping = time shopping, enjoying shopping, stronger identities have more involvement. Gender paradox: most people marry people who are similar in various ways. People of the same: social class, education, age, ethnic background, religion, race. Feminism is not an attack on men, but a demand for gender equality.
