Document Summary

4. 3: coping resources and coping behaviour (lecture + turner & brown reading) Models for the combined effect of stress and coping. These are just a set of logical possibilities. Top - a: stress affects everyone the same. B: coping useful even when not facing stressors (no effect of stress; difference bt high and low resources) Middle: a + b = c. Coping resources help and stress pushes everything in same direction. Parallel lines: when stressor happens, doesn"t matter how much resource you have, it has the same effect. High resources: immune to stressor; little increase in stress as stressors accumulate. Low resources: rise in distress is rapid w each stressor. Combo of coping resource that matters on its own, plus stress makes a difference on its own. Difference bt people with high and low resources, even at low level of stressors. Works even when there is no explicit supportive interaction. Perceived support reduces the impact of stress.
