Goffman: the social world is theater and that we each play our roles based on that piece of theatre, there are always attribution processes going on - they are premised on cues/displays. Sex assignment geneder idenity - gender role (cues of display occur here - we cue the gender assignment/we cue the sex that we are) Gender is not something hat you are but it is something that you do: performative interval. All of these makes gender natural to us, it becomes an essence/essential part of ourselves. Doing gender is an interactional scaffolding of social structure. Over time patterned acts of doing gender solidify into society and this solidification maximizes social control over men and women solidifies over time into social structures which maximizes the control. Gender is something that we do --- we should deconstruct it @ the cultural level.
