SOC365H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Jeff Lorber, Sociality, Symbolic Interactionism
Document Summary
Three ways we can think about gender. 1st as a process gender as not static or pre-social, rather that it is fluid and produced through interactions over time. Need to think about specific context in which it emerges. Those that are interested in analyzing process are specifically interested in contexts such as settings such as work, a bar, school all of these are contexts and have different processes of gender formation. We do gender differently based on the context in which we are. 2nd system of stratification gender affords differential opportunities and resources to men and women. The labor force is a prime example of a system of stratification i. e. (cid:373)e(cid:374)"s work is ofte(cid:374) (cid:272)o(cid:374)sidered superior, (cid:373)e(cid:374) are ofte(cid:374) paid (cid:373)ore, jo(cid:271)s hold (cid:373)ore prestige and given more authority than women at work. Gender serves as a system of stratification in these examples.
