SOC365H1 Lecture 2: SOC365 Lecture Two
Document Summary
Gender isn"t static, pre-constituted, pre-social, but created via socialization. Gender as a process is contextually dependent, such as work, family, partners, etc. Context is always a part of gender analysis, especially in interactions. We have a notion of doing gender in an active or interactive way: system of stratification. The labour force is a clear field of stratified gender differences. This is also differentiated by race, class, etc intersectionality: structure. Gender roles are institutionalized and structured so that social life is organized around gender. Lorber quote on 118, last paragraph, italics: for humans, the social is the natural. nature does not provide hard wiring for action, rather society does. We need to look to society not nature to understand our behaviour, such as institutions of culture. Gender is treated naturalistic, therefore lorber emphasizes the importance of culture that informs such notions. Ethnomethodological approach, studies social order as a practical accomplishment.
