SOC102H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Gender Inequality, Escalator, Advantageous
Document Summary
Sex and age are universal bases of social differentiation. Very few things that societies enshrine as social differences. Gender paradox: people carry those who are like themselves. People marry those of same social class, education, age, religion, ethnic background, and racial origin but obviously religion and ethnic background not as important as social class and education is. But then people tend to marry those of the other sex. When people marry across the other sex they are marrying someone who is different from them and this presents unfamiliarity and power or authority differences, deemed cultural different from them. Marked by power differences and gives more power authority and respect to men. How does they establish a working happy relationship across this cultural divide and establish sexual relations and marital satisfaction. Gender inequality is a troublesome thing and no more troublesome than in a relationship.
