Document Summary

Main concern is representation: how we see something, does not refer to reality but to our construction of reality. It doesn"t have to be true but what something thinks is true: unless it is a self representation it is not reliable. Main focus is on race (black man in a white society) how representation functions in race. Whether you do a good or bad job of representing them they are being misrepresented. When someone represents someone else (identifies and classifies) they are othering them. It belittles and damages the person: this is the result of racism which comes from imperialism (misrepresentation). Societies are structured in such a way that allow for the representation of the other": racism assumes that one person has the power to identify the other in their own terms. Objectification: represent someone in terms of attributes or characteristics that are physical, diminish or devalue their humanity/treat them as less than human.
