Document Summary

Electric era: not like typographic; instantaneous and spontaneous. Hot media: passive; don"t have to work at understanding (i. e. watching tv, movies) Cool media: active; have to work at it - participate (i. e. reading, tv with small screens) Hot and cool = relative to each other. Instrumentalism: too much emphasis on one idea -> says it"s the cause of everything. Too much emphasis on the impact on the medium. Opacity: intentionally makes writing difficult to read. Too many aphorisms and anecdotes - self-indulgent lack of clarity. Obscurantism: don"t know what you"re talking about and using complex writing to cover it up. Tentative - unsure of where things will lead. Mosaic: combination of elements that don"t seem to belong together - juxtapositions. By the time he died, communication/technology was still not as advanced. Priorities, the way we live, how we think changed dramatically because of technology/how we communicate.
