Newspaper was not invented like other forms of mass media. Newspaper evolved - collection of steps to become what it is. There was always something like a newspaper just a variation of what we know it to be. Di bao (china), acta (rome) - court records, important information written and posted publicly. Ballad books (middle ages) - travel from town to town to sing/entertain/plays - herd information from many places -> information = gathered in books. First close resemblance to newspaper: venice (gazette - small coin = cost), amsterdam (coranto - up to date / current ): important, wealthy, trading cities - relied heavily on maritime trade - relied on for information and livelihood. Needed to know about wars, laws, piracy, storm, etc. Always new source of information coming in because of ships. Someone would gather information and write them down before printing press.
