Materiality: the physical medium used to store and convey text: texts are inextricably tried to, and constrained and mediated by the devices which transmit them. Digital objects are not just what they appear to be, they are mediated to us by a screen, we tend to look at the screen, not the encoded subject at the core. At their core, they are encoded objects. All what is downloaded actually always exists; whether or not you delete it. When you delete a file from your computer, the space that file occupied is flagged as space available for reuse. That space is not necessarily ever reused. Nsa recommends driving a tank over your hard drive. In theory, it is possible to recover data from hard drives damaged by fire, flood, pressure, and magnets. Wsec is better because it has a more general view, and isn"t restricted to a certain time like darton"s model.
