The history of sexuality talks about pre-modern acts (the idea of sexuality as something you do) vs. modern identities (the idea of sexuality as something you are) Punishment and crime change radically with the advent of modernity; identity develops, what caused the individual to commit the act (etiology) becomes more important. Criminal acts vs. criminal minds (act of madness vs. a mad personality) Sodomy was previously punishable by law, but now the sodomite became a pervert in need of treatment. Object choice doesn t matter as long as a citizen is having sex with a non-citizen. Sexuality is in the public sphere, not the private sphere, since what is going on in the bedroom is related to the political, historical, and economical culture of athens. Today we think about two men having sex as sharing an identity because they are involved in a mutual enterprise.
