Chapter 1 The changing boundaries of criminology Criminology – is the scientific study of the making of laws, the breaking of laws and society’s reaction to the breaking of laws. Criminologist – assess/measure crime over time and place and they measure the characteristics of criminals and crime. Collect information for study analysis in accordance with research methods Major schools of thought that contributed to criminology: 1. Classical school – focused on crime (Cesare Baccaria) 2. Positivist school – focused on criminals (Cesare Lombroso, Enrico Ferri and Raffaele Garofalo) **Perspective Matters - perspective of individuals vary and change as does the perspective of the state when laws change over time - have to take in perspective the context
