PSYC 332 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Blood Alcohol Content, Avoidance Coping, Real Change
LECTURE 3 – June 10th
Leventhal: [illness cognitions]
• Illness and symptoms are dealt with in the same way as other problems.
e.g., individuals are motivated to solve any problem and re-establish a state of normality
• Through interpretation: of symptom perception or social messages (the physician
diagosed this as ….
• Assign meaning to the problem (often resulting in changes to the emotional state)
• Development of coping strategies
o approach coping (e.g., take meds, rest, talk to friends)
o avoidance coping (e.g., denial – can be effective and adapted, wishful thinking –
hardly ever adapted)
• appraisal of effectiveness of coping strategy
{Significant change (last 20-30 years) in coping strategies for illnesses and injuries, rather than
resting, individuals are now encouraged to keep moving in whatever capacity they can. This
includes those afflicted by arthritis, older individuals, ACL tears, and even those with fractures

Social Support (5 types)
• Network - (people – medical practitioners, counsellors incl.)
• Tangible – young people* especially value this, and those who have no access to these
basics such as the homeless (money, food, housing etc.)
• Information - (pamphlets, fact sheets)
• Emotional ** -
• Esteem ** -
**When people have a long-term affliction, they crave these two the most
In Class Discussion:
2) Commitment to legalize, strictly regulate and restrict access to cannabis.
There are many difficulties that the government must overcome in legalizing marijuana
in order to ensure the safety of the population. One such issue is in regard to the legal age of
consumption of cannabis. While it may seem logical to set the age as the same as alcohol
consumption, some pediatricians have raised concern over the long-term effects of cannabis on
the developing brain. At first this may seem like a valid concern, it begs the question whether or
not there is similar risk when young adults consume alcohol though it is currently not as
regulated as cannabis is proposed to be.
Another challenge in legalizing cannabis is the apparent lack of resources for police to
determine mental acuity of a driver under the influence of marijuana. While with alcohol the
standardized blood alcohol content, but to our knowledge, there is no equivalent for marijuana
