PSYC 1150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Henry Molaison, Temporal Lobe, Scoville Scale
Document Summary
Seizures are the result of flurries of electrical impulses moving across the brain: the temporal lobe is damaged. Leborgne suffered from syphilis, could only say tan , but his voice box was in tact: Brocca discovered that the brocca"s area of leborgne"s brain was missing. Leborgne could still understand questions but could not respond with anything other tan . Julia, fluent in three languages, has a massive stroke and can no longer name things: she can"t find the words to define things, but she can describe them. Cathy, a neurologist, has looked at a structure of julia"s brain in the parietal cortex. Anterior part of the temporal lobe lights up (has to do with meaning of words) when she tries to pronounce words. Silent areas: areas of the brain that do not react to cutting. Maps are used to guide neurosurgeons through the brain, avoiding dangerous areas and instead only cutting through silent areas.
