Document Summary

Intro to american studies lecture 4 oct. 5. 2014. After the seven years war, and the defeat of the french empire by the british. In england post war the english decided that because the colonies benefited in large, then it should be the colonies to pay the bill for this war. Many taxes were imposed upon the colonies. Sugar act 1764 first tax designed specifically to raise revenue for the crown. All legal documents in the colonies had to be printed on a paper made in london, stamped with a revenue stamp paid for in british currency. Townshend act 1767 a series of taxes levied in the colonies to raise revenue to pay governors and judges so that they would be independent of colonial influence and strictly enforce british political and legal interests. They felt cheated because there was no real representation for where the money that they were being taxed was going.
