Anatomy and Cell Biology 3309 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Stratified Squamous Epithelium, Tongue, Skeletal Muscle
Document Summary
The mucous membrane on the oral part is covered by little projections (papillae: 3 out of the 4 kinds of papillae occur in the human. The stratified squamous epithelium can be keratinized or non-keratinized, depending on the location. Composed chiefly of skeletal muscle in interlacing bundles in 3 planes. Filiform papillae: high, narrow conical structures with epithelial caps - threadlike, cats have lots of these papilla feel them when cats lick you. Found more on younger people, and flattens out as you age. Flattened at the top: usually 3 secondary connective tissue papillae. Circumvallate papillae: distributed along the sulcus terminalis, glands of von ebner (serous type) (produces saliva) empty into the furrow. Find taste buds in circumvallate, fungiform, and foliate papillae, and even in palate and epiglottis: appear as oval bodies in the epithelium, a small opening called the taste pore is present at the surface.
