Humans have non-keratinized epithelium on the underside - this is a mouse so there is keratin on the underside. Each one has a germal papillae underneath (light regions within the papillae) Keratin is found on the tips of the papilla. There are serous and mucous glands within the tongue. Can see at low mag the dark and light islands of glands. Found within the tongue and all amongst the oral cavity. Darker stained, made up of secretory acini; nuclei are sitting on outside, lots of secretory granules in centre of cells. Lighter stained: mucous gland, nuclei are at periphery. Same size as fungiform but upper/dorsal surface is flat. Large ridges along side of tongue that divide surface into parallel rows. No taste buds on dorsal surface, taste buds on lateral surface.
