Lecture 034: Systemic Circulation - Major Arteries and Veins
Major Arteries and Veins Objectives
Describe the major branches of the thoracic and abdominal aorta
Describe the arterial blood supply to the lower limb
Describe 6 locations at take a pulse which arteries are superficial enough to
Compare and contrast the arterial and venous supplies to the upper and lower limb
Describe the formation of the superior vena cava
Describe the hepatic portal system
Major Branches of the Thoracic Aorta
Bronchial branches
2-3 branches
Goes to the lungs
Esophageal branches
2-3 branches
Esophageal runs parallel to the aorta
Posterior intercostal arteries (9)
Contributes to the circuit of arteries underneath the ribs (3-11)
Pericardial branches
Provide blood to the pericardial sac
Superior phrenic branches
Provides blood to the diaphragm
2 -3 branches
Subcostal artery
Runs underneath the 12th rub (not really intercostal)
Note:
First 2 ribs are too high to get blood from the aorta
Get blood from the costocervical artery
Aorta penetrates the diaphragm at the aortic Hiatus
At T12
Esophageal at T10
Vena cava at T8
Major Branches of the Abdominal Aorta (3 SINGLE branches)
Celiac trunk
Short
Immediate give rise to a bunch of branches
Feeds the liver, pancreas, duodenum (digestive system)
Superior mesenteric artery
Provide blood to all of the small intestine and a portion of the large intestine
Inferior mesenteric artery
Provide blood to all of the large intestine and colon
