How did biological/physical anthropology develop as a eld off scholarly inquiry? (cont. ) Genetics is a generally new science (last 50 years) Double stranded macromolecule with a coiled, double helix structure. These carry the genetic information and are nitrogen bearing. Form structures through the pairing of complementary pairs. Cells contain enzymes to facilitate the pairing of the bases. Somatic cells (skin cells, muscle cells and blood cells) Then split to the poles and eventually into new daughter cells: meiosis. Replicate, align, poles, daughter cells, then second divisions where the chromosomes separate. Daughter cells have half the number of chromosomes of he parent (not genetically identical) Gametes containing the haploid number of chromosomes eventually must be fertilized by a gamete of the opposite sex to produce a diploid numbered cell (offspring) Gregor mendel: mid 1860s, dominant theory of blending of traits from parent to offspring was not correct. He also determined that some traits are more dominant than others.
