An expanded neocortex may be an evolutionary result of: complex social milleu and interactions, advantages gained from tactical deception, ability to gauge and understand mental state of other in group and use that to your advantage. Think: planning a surprise party, collective planning; knowing something that they know and you use that to your advantage. Deceptive means as well (think: social manipulation!: enabling mutually benefical cooperation, as well as a success in foraging and engaging in extractive foraging. 15-25 years which is longer than other mammals of the same body size) so there is a lot of social development. Lots of learned behaviors occurring in social groups. No one complete or correct taxonomy based on different things. Researchers are beginning to use both forms of it for classification. Eg: brain size in elephants in humans; elephants have absolutely bigger brains but humans have relatively larger brains: brain body size, diet and bmr (basal metabolic rates)
