Tuesday, january 9, 2018 anthro 2229 rst lecture starting off with: He was found in 1996 in columbia river, washington. C-14 dated to ca 9400 years ago but does not look like modern north american. Subject of a long legal battle between native americans who claimed him under. Didn"t look like na native but because of date had to be. Scientists like those from smithsonian wanted to study him. Concluded he is most similar to se asian populations (polynesians; the ainu of japan) But dna tests conducted in 2015 concluded that he is most similar to modern native. Was repatriated to the tribes in february 2017. The importance of this case study is that it laid bare some of the problems in relation to indigenous people in us. Raised issue of who should have right to raise issue of remains. Indigenous groups around world becoming more vocal on who these remains belong to and if they should be studied.
