Objectives: understand the importance of context in analyzing discourse, be able to analyze a verbal interaction using ethnography of speaking approach with attention to multiple modalities. Not just looking at the words, but this sort of cultural context in which those words are spoken/written. Speech community includes writing and not just speech. Units of analysis: speech situation, speech event, speech act. Don"t just describe, must explain in relation to cultural/social processes. What is a comical hypothetical: someone says something that is supposed to be funny, imagine if , a hypothetical or improbably scenario created by one or more speakers. Many speech events are collaboratively and sequentially constructed in conversation. Comical hypothetical emerges from ongoing talk or situation. Speaking analysis provides good description of speech situation and speech event. Wearing protest clothing is a display of moral goodness and being informed.
