Anthro 4400 dec 6 lecture notes on robbins piece. Students liked his piece; thought he wrote clearly. Not just continuity thinking, the aim to construct an all embracing model of consistence. Robbins says we need drive for coherence and analysis. Second point: people can only perceive what their cultural categories can perceive. People are capable of thinking outside all the time, understanding things from different cultures. We have to be suspicious of belief that people are locked into cultural categories and can"t get out. Doesn"t mean its easy or that we are all facing the same. Obliged to take it seriously when people are saying people are doing things differently all of a sudden. These anthropologists will have a dif cult time proving this. Prof: in papua new guinea, they have to keep genealogies of pigs and chiefs cannot eat domestic pigs cause they have to feed the whole village.
