Document Summary

Aims: locating sites, investigating sites without large scale excavation, not destroying the land before excavation begins. Used to be done by walking around with topographic maps. Now it is done using a handheld gps. Aims: detailed investigation of sub-surface features. Used to be done in with tape measures in relation to the datum. Now is done with gps in relation to longitude and latitude. Based on what we already know about an area. Most people tend to live near water: looking near water is a good place to start. Advantages: increases chance of finding sites, can avoid difficult or inaccessible terrain. Disadvantages: unlikely to find a new site, results cannot be used to extrapolate to whole study region. Divide up the study area into equally sized units. Find a way to randomly select some of the units to survey. Advantages: results can be used to extrapolate to whole study areas, more likely to locate full range of site types.
