Thursday, november 24, 2016 anthro3301 lecture 10 notes. As a child, he spent part of the year in the city of chicago, also spent a part in rural illinois. Hew would move back and fourth between he city and a rural community. Studied at the u. of chicago ( rst law, but in uenced by sociology) Us became involved in that war in 1917. Started studying biology, then switched to law, then in 1923, made his rst trip to mexico with his wife. In uenced by sociology through father in law. After travelling to mexico, he decided he would like to be an anthropologist. This distinctive approach to sociology looked at variations in urban life in different areas of the city. Students treated the city like a laboratory, doing empirical eldwork. Looking at the movement of in uences/direction of in uences. Saw change or in uences radiating out from a densely populated center.
