These became catalyst for his methods in ecology. Went to uc berkeley - ma 1927, phd 1929. One of rst students going through program. Started with archaeological research and then ethnographic research. Worked at bureau of american ethnology 1935-46. He was looking for similarities but his grad students looking for differences. He was interested in determining causation in cultural and environment. He developed concept of culture that placed priority on core features. For steward, some more important than others. The core: combination of technology and environment in speci c ethnographic cases in speci c environments. How speci c societies in speci c environments use resources. Approach to research that became prominent during and after ww. Pearl harbour attack - need to understand other societies. Need to understand cultures and motivations that posed problem to us.
