Document Summary
Overview: developmental genetics aim to determine a pathway of gene interactions. Investigate how does one gene affect the expression of another how mutations in a different gene affect the distribution & localization of the mrna / protein product of a gene. Ways to determine gene interactions: observe protein expression patterns (using drosophila) 2 proteins: wingless protein (wt = wings) & vestigial protein (wt = non-vestigial development) The gene products / proteins of these 2 genes are only expressed in a subset of cells (imaginal discs: imaginal discs are essentially a group of undifferentiated cells that will later develop into adult tissues. Fused the genes with uorescent proteins & conduct fret. Observes area which develops into wings & visualize the locations of which important proteins are expressed. Wt: green: wingless protein is expressed, red: vestigial proteins is expressed, yellow: both proteins are co-expressed mutant, absence of green: wingless protein isn"t expressed, reduced red: reduced vestigial protein expression.
