Ecosystem service: resources and services derived from nature that bring benefits to human. Production of raw materials: food, fibre, fuel, biochemical, freshwater, tends to have a market value, regulating ecosystem services. Biodiversity not regarded as ecosystem service, but as a pre-requisite underpinning each of them: biodiversity supports delivery of services, ecosystem services capacity is reduced with biodiversity loss, functional diversity and redundancy is important. Humans mainly manage ecosystems for provisional services: a(cid:373)ou(cid:374)t of resour(cid:272)es (cid:449)e"re o(cid:271)tai(cid:374)i(cid:374)g fro(cid:373) (cid:374)ature i(cid:374)(cid:272)reasi(cid:374)g (pro(cid:448)isio(cid:374)i(cid:374)g e(cid:272)osyste(cid:373) services, led to a decrease in global regulating ecosystem services, culture ecosystem services vary (increasing/decreasing) in different regions of the world. Trade-offs in differing land management: crop production, forest production, preserving habitats and biodiversity, water flow regulation, water quality regulation, carbon sequestration, regional climate and air quality regulation, infectious disease mediation. Assigning monetary value to ecosystem services is approach for conservation, land use management and policy decisions. Step 1 incorporate values into decision-making process.
