Nothing in evolution makes sense except in the light of genetics. Science builds up progressively and makes a model. Some history: evolution and its genetic basis darwin 1859, lamarck ~1800, mendel. We are able to make more of ourselves but things that we make are not exactly the same as us. This process contributes to evolution: darwin"s postulates, thomas: more offspring is produced than environment can carry -> excess offspring, along the offspring, there"s variation. Siblings are different from each other: some of that variation is inherited -> from self replication, they will have different reproductive success. Some individuals are better adaptive (may be inherited), so they will have more chance of offspring. In europe 1800"s, they were busy developing canals. As they were digging canals, they saw rocks containing fossils. Upper layer = recent and lower layer = ancient.
