Document Summary

Gsa: meaning of potential, kinetic, chemical energy. Chemical energy is another form on potential energy- stored in chemical bonds. Chemical energy has to do with how much potential energy its electrons have (further from nucleus, more ep): closed, open vs. isolated systems. Open systems can exchange both matter and energy. Isolated systems cannot exchange anything: first law of thermodynamics, second law of thermodynamics. First law- energy cannot be created or destroyed; only transformed. Second law- energy moves to become dispersed- entropy: entropy as energy spreading. Entropy is basically the spreading of energy (diffusion, example): gibbs free energy (delta g). Delta g is a measure of whether or not a process is spontaneous: enthalpy. Enthalpy is amount of potential energy present: distinction among the terms: exothermic, endothermic, exergonic, endergonic. Exothermic- delta h is negative, delta s is positive, release energy. Endergonic- non- spontaneous reaction: why the breakdown of glucose increases entropy.
