Document Summary

It is important to understand the monomer in order to understand the polymer. Subunits join together (i. e. nucleic acids dna) Photosynthesis is an anabolic reaction (i. e. carbon dioxide and water glucose) Cellular respiration is a catabolic reaction (i. e. glucose carbon dioxide and water) The chemistry of water is relevant to these reactions. Dehydration remove water from individual monomers, which synthesizes into a polymer. Hydrolysis adding water to an individual polymer, which breakdowns into a monomer. A catalytic protein adds or removes the water. Chemical bonds are either breaking or reforming. The bonds have to be made less stable in order to break. Exergonic reactions are spontaneous, while the reactants have more free energy than the products. For the reaction to happen, activation energy must be inputted to move the rxn. to the transition state. Activation energy can come from the two molecules colliding. This brings them to the transition state and the rxn. can proceed spontaneously.
