Thus far we have talked about how enzymes and their roles in biological pathways: enzymes are proteins with catalytic activity. Proteins may perform a variety of other functions in the cells as well. How does the neanderthal (~50,000 y old) genome compare to the modern humans: single nucleotide polymorphisms (differences, catalogued sites where all (or nearly all) present day humans have the same snp but differ from neanderthal. Early 1900s scientists thought proteins was the molecule of heredity: 20 amino acids vs 4 nucleotides, protein contains more info per unit. Depite results of avery and griffith, not all were convinced: protein made more sense, more information. Results prove dna is the genetic material. Nucleotide composition: 5-c sugar deoxyribose, phosphate group, of nitrogenous bases. Chargaffs rules: nucleotide composition varies between species, # purines = # pyrimidines, a=t, c=g. February 8th, 2017: 5" end 3" end. What wasn"t known: number of polynucleotide chains in dna molecule, how chains interact with each other.
