Genetics focuses on a single gene while genomics focuses on all genes and their relationships. Give a good analysis of the interrelationship of many genes. Cells are arrested in metaphase and treated w/ various chemicals in order to capture the chromosomes when they are the most condense. Cytogeneticists can recognize the pattern of bands and identify all of the autosomal chromosomes. You have to take the chromosome spread and organize them into a karyotype. A graphical representation of a chromosome spread. This shows a picture of the entire genome. All human banding patterns should be the same. This helps us to identify large chromosomal abnormalities (millions of base pairs) Extra chromosomes and large scale chromosome rearrangements can be detected (i. e. duplication of a particular region) A karyotype is often the first line of genetic diagnosis in many clinics and hospitals. We knew the amount of chromosomes humans had, the sizes, and the sex chromosomes.
