Biology 1202B Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Chromosome, Lytic Cycle, Lysozyme
Document Summary
Younger people had stronger immune systems than older adults: actually the immune response that is to blame, those with stronger immune systems were more susceptible. Seven characteristics that are characteristic to all living things. Not all of these are fulfilled for viruses or retroviruses. They do not harness or utilize energy: no glycolysis or photosynthesis, no atp. Protein coat is made up of repeating protein subunits: very simple proteins. Very small genomes: only codes for the things necessary for the virus to replicate itself, only goal or purpose is to replicate itself. Some viruses takes a membrane or has a membrane: ex. Membrane contains proteins that were from the host cell: host cell proteins. Some of these proteins are encoded by the virus itself. Proteins can be made by the virus and can be put into the membrane as well: having this mix of proteins plays a role in invading host cell defenses, membrane helps virus get past cellular defences.
