Dna technologies rely on enzymes: often modified perform better. 1978 nobel prize in physiology or medicine: discovery of restriction enzymes. Restriction enzymes- specific joining of two dna molecules from different sources. Hundreds of restriction enzymes have been identified, each cutting dna at a specific restriction site. End result: dna from two different sources join together to form recombinant dna. Analyzes a sample of amplified dna to see if the copies are. Dna, rna, or protein molecules are separated in a gel the same length as the target subjected to an electric field. Gel acts as a sieve to separate the macromolecules based on size, electrical charge, or other properties. The size of the amplified dna is determined by comparing the position of the dna band with the positions of dna fragments of known size separated on the gel at the same time. Blotting is the transfer of dna from the gel to a charged membrane.
