The name of the region may be one thing, but people identified from their central cities. I am a spartan but lives in lacedaemon: lacedaemon, dorians. Helots and social hierarchy: perioeci -> spartans called people around them this and they had a special status, kind of like a pact, if sparta went to war they must go to war with them. The greeks recognized them as spartans even though they were individual poleis: 1st messenian war (740-720) -> spartans attacked messenia and conquered the region and required everyone in the region to subject and work for sparta. Initially villages coming out of the dark age would band together, but when it got over populated they forced people to relocate. No outsiders: education and upbringing of boys. Eugenics -> for the purpose that the kids being raised were worth it. Majority of training was done ages 7-30. 7-14 was survival training-> denied food and clothing to teach stealth to steal things.
