In the bay of naples, next to mt. Pompeii is preserved by coverings of the volcanic eruption. Vesuvius erupts and preserves the city in the moment of activity. Pompeii becomes the most important city for us to investigate now in the modern period but it wasn"t the most important nor largest city in italy back then. But you can"t compare pompeii to any other city because of how well it is preserved. Eruption was not lava that filled the city; it was covered by ash. It erupted, wind was blowing southeast and came along the way to pompeii and the area in dark red was covered by the most amount of ash. Up to 4m-6m of volcanic ash covering the city. Up to usually the 2nd floor was covered in ash. Right fig: actual stratigraphy layers of pummus and layers of stone. Then it fell right back down, solidified and everything is hardened in place.
