Communication Sciences and Disorders 4411A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Vocal Tract, Audiology, Audiometer
Document Summary
Communication sciences and disorders lecture 3a: hearing disorder. I. e. speech (air shaped by vocal tract and articulators), ball bounced on floor, hands clapping, etc. What is heard when ear detects sound wave and converts it to message that brain can understand. 1: air molecules are pushed , causing them to be compressed, air molecules rebound causing them to spread apart or become decompressed, repeated compression and decompression creates a waveform. One complete compression and decompression/rarefaction of the air. 1 hertz = 1 sound wave vibration (cycle) per second. Frequency = rate of vibration of sound source. Number of complete sound wave cycles in one second. 1000 complete sound wave cycles in one second = 1000 hz. Humans can hear between 20 hz and 20,000 hz. Pure tone = sound that vibrates at only one frequency. Complex = contains more than one frequency; motion pattern is complex but has a pattern.
