Communication Sciences and Disorders 4411A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Laryngoscopy, Malnutrition, Aspiration Pneumonia
Document Summary
Communication sciences and disorders 4411a lecture 12: dysphagia. Neuromuscular act of moving substances from the mouth into the throat and stomach. Why do we swallow: maintenance remove natural buildup of saliva in oral cavity. Protection protect respiratory system from entry of foreign material. In adults, upper respiratory and digestive paths are crossed. Oral cavity lips, tongue, teeth, saliva. Pharynx muscles, epiglottis, valleculae, upper esophageal sphincter. Another version: oral preparatory, oral (transport) Food propelled through esophagus by peristaltic action (and gravity) towards the stomach. Muscles of esophagus move bolus down stomach in peristaltic contractions. After bolus enters esophagus, breathing returns to normal: oral phase. Purpose to prepare substance to be swallowed. Includes containing material in oral cavity and preparing food/liquid into cohesive ball (bolus) Purpose to move bolus to rear of oral cavity until swallow reflex is triggered (in pharyngeal phase) Begins with posterior tongue action that moves the bolus back.
