Document Summary
Early in the mainframe era, russell ackoff wrote an article called management misinformation systems : suggested that several erroneous assumptions were being made about information systems and described how these assumptions affected managerial decision making. 3 assumptions that ackoff wrote about: managers will have no problem making decisions if they get the data they need. Ackoff countered that for most managers, too many possibilities exist shouldn"t expect their decisions to improve even with perfect data: poor decisions are made because managers lack relevant information. Ackoff countered managers suffer more from an overabundance of irrelevant data information overload: managers are aware of the data they need. Ackoff argued that in reality, managers are often not sure just what data they do require. Because they"re unsure, natural tendency is to ask for as much data as they can get which leads to information overload. Exponential growth (in terms of bytes) occurs inside and outside of organizations: used to improve decision making.
